Bridal Attire

You Wear It Well

The perfect gown. Is there such a thing? We think so. It all comes down to knowing what you want, where to find it, who to ask for help, and what comes next after you’ve made your decision. Finding just the right ensemble for a special occasion is rarely easy, but with the right direction you can get dressed in the perfect gown for your wedding with ease and confidence.

What’s on your mind

First things first. What do you want? Have you always dreamt of walking down the aisle in a satin and tulle ball gown? Or perhaps your taste runs more classic, and you crave a Jackie O style gown. Maybe you’re a less is more kind of girl and want a simple sheath. Whatever your style, there’s something out there waiting for you. If you don’t have a certain look in mind, dust off all those bridal magazines you’ve been hoarding. Flip through the pages that feature gowns and mark those that you like. After you’ve finished, go back and take a look at what those gowns have in common. Are thesilhouettes similar? Do you find yourself drawn to a certain style of neckline? Are the skirts full or fitted?

Looking at the details and comparing those you like will give you an idea of what you want before you head to the bridal salon. It’s also a good idea to take the pages of gowns that you truly love along with you to the bridal salon. They’ll provide a handy reference to the salesperson and help her get a better idea of your taste.

Where to go

Keep those magazines out, because they’ll be your best bet for finding great gowns and the shops that carry them. The Internet is another great tool for finding bridal shops in your area. If you’ve fallen in love with a specific designer, do a web search for the designer’s website. Most will highlight the designer’s current line along with a list of bridal salons and shops in your area where you can find them.

And don’t forget to ask some of your recently married friends for bridal salon recommendations. You’ll likely receive the best information this way, along with candid feedback about a salon’s service, prices, and selection.

Once you’ve chosen three or four locations (too many can be overwhelming) it’s a good idea to phone ahead before venturing out. Many require appointments, and those that don’t will be able to recommend a time to visit when you’ll receive one-on-one attention.

What to look for once you’re there

The type of gown you choose should directly relate to the style and formality of the wedding you’re planning. Are you hosting an ultra formal affair at a hotel ballroom? Maybe casual nuptials in your parents’ backyard? Or how about a chic celebration in a museum or art gallery? Each scenario begs for a different style of gown, so be sure to share the location information with the sales-person. She can then guide you toward styles that will best complement the formality of your affair.

However, don’t underestimate the importance of goose bumps. If you step out of the fitting room in a gown that gives you instant goose bumps or even tears, give it careful consideration even if it’s considered too casual or too formal for the style of your celebration. If you feel, deep down inside, that it’s “the one” there are ways to add elegance to an informal silhouette or dress down an ultra formal style.

Who to bring along

While you may be tempted to gather all your nearest and dearest to help you find your dream attire, it’s best to take a step back and invite only one or two close friends or family members. Be sure the people you have around you are not only supportive, but also objective, Remember, you’ll be relying on them to help you make a decision on your attire for one of the most important days of your life.  Who else but your mom or your best friend can you trust to tell you that a large bustle doesn’t flatter your derriere or that scoop neckline enhances your décolletage a bit too much? Surround yourself with those whose opinions you value and they won’t lead you astray.
