Rising to The Occasion
Colorful, cheerful, and original, balloons add a festive touch to any celebration. From dramatic arches and pillars to gigantic hearts framing the head table, balloons create a lighthearted atmosphere that’s sure to bring smiles.
There are two basic types of balloons that are popular for weddings and special events. Mylar balloons, also called foil balloons, are shiny metallic and can be found in all colors and sizes. While it is possible to create large sculptures out of foil balloons, this type is usually best incorporated in table arrangements or centerpieces. Latex balloons are the variation that most of us are familiar with. Traditional latex balloons are easy for a professional to work with and can transform a basic banquet or ballroom into something out of a fairy tale. Ceiling-high arches, tall twisted pillars, dance floor canopies, and colorful centerpieces can all be created from latex balloons. Whether or not you choose to use flowers is up to you, but the bulk of your reception décor can be created entirely from balloons that match your wedding colors. Work with your provider to find the perfect color, and if it’s not available, see if he or she can “double up” the balloons to achieve the correct color. Doubling up refers to the process of placing a balloon of one color inside a balloon of a different color to create an entirely different hue.
If you’re looking to make a huge splash during your reception, consider a balloon drop. A large net filled with balloons and confetti is affixed to the ceiling and a cord is attached to the net. At the designated time, your DJ or wedding coordinator can release the balloons, letting them float down from the ceiling. Your balloon release can resemble New Year’s Eve and begin at the stroke of midnight, or you can arrange to be showered in balloons during your first dance. Either way, the photos will be spectacular and everyone will enjoy dancing around a cascade of balloons.
Hiring a balloon artist should be taken just as seriously as hiring any other wedding professional. Interview your top two or three choices, and be sure to look at portfolios of their past work to get a better idea of what type of designs they can offer you. Before you book anyone, ask the following questions to be sure you’ve found the right person for the job.
· Has the balloon artist ever worked with your reception site before? If so, does he or she have photos of the decorated room?
· How long will it take to set up?
· What happens if large portions of the balloons pop or deflate? Are there ways to rearrange the remaining balloons to cover the area?
· Who is responsible for clean up? Will the balloon professional return to the reception site to retrieve any of the props or stands?
The great thing about balloon décor is that there are styles that fit into any budget. So if you’re looking to add a bit of color and charm to your reception site, consider working with a professional balloon artist. It’s a lighthearted approach to decorating that is sure to create fond memories.
